Would it be on time? Very close. Would the weather hold? Just about. Would it be going far quicker than I expected causing a major disaster on the photographic front? Check. Doh! It stops at Brockenhurst for about a fortnight in order to let the Voyager through. So, rather than ease the 5 or 6 minute connection for the next train at Soton, intending connecting passangers get to wait for the train they could have caught from Bomo to start with. Handy for snapping the Lymington 3 CIG if nothing else.... Hopefully someone will take them on - there's nothing quite like relaxing on a giant sofa with a beer while listening to the whine of British built electric stock clattering along between Southampton and Bournemouth! In addition, you can still find the moveable postal trolley bridge (or whatever it was) that used to allow parcels etc. to be taken from the station building to platform 2 without needing to carry it up the footbridge. Sadly both visiting engines suffered from hot boxes, but nonetheless all the stops were pulled out to put on the best show possible. Fog on Saturday morning didn't help proceedings, but notwithstanding there was plenty to see and do. Sadly two turns in two days limited the photo opportunities to next to nothing, but an impromptu lineup in the loco yard on Saturday was not to be missed.... The main reason for this is that most people don't want to have nice glossy print of every single shot I've taken (or any shot for that matter!), so there's little point in posting huge pictures that fill the screen or are even larger, especially given the time they will take to load, and the fact that if I had have done, this gallery would occupy more than twenty times the space I get allocated. However, I have noticed the odd purchase here and there, and obviously I'd like the end result to look the best possible. Therefore I have decided that on request, I will upload the original file so that anyone interested can get Fotopic's printshop service to conjure them up a print, mousemat or coffee mug can have one where the picture doesn't look like the subject is made from Lego! So with apologies to Mr Summers who enquired ages ago about getting some decent prints of a couple of shots of the DukeDog, here are some rather larger pics. ]]> Sat Nov 11 2006 114 Enters traffic http://nickspix.fotopic.net/c1128305.html After many years of hard work, LCDR brake 114 was finally ready to be released into traffic, and to acknowledge the work put in by the team involved, a special train was run for them with 661 and a rare passenger outing by Stepney. Unfortunately, the weather was too good, and the bright sunshine and cloudless sky combined to confound my camera into chronic overexposure for the most part, so apologies for the less than wonderful results! This year's shot featured newly-restored 1638 with a set of SR coaches including some Maunsell stock, and visiting Ivatt 41312 (masquerading as a classmate) on a short goods train. A survivor from the famous Barry scrapyard after the purchase was funded by George Nickson, it is now back in running order for the first time in over 40 years. As a bonus, the locomotive was also in service the following day on the lunchtime Golden Arrow. Saturday 18 February 2006: Today saw the newly finished Maunsell 'U' class 1638 in service for the first time with something other than a test train. ]]> Sat Feb 18 2006 Bluebell Thursday Shunt http://nickspix.fotopic.net/c840677.html Believed to be the only regular scheduled steam shunt in the country, the opportunity is taken on most Mondays and Thursdays to take stock to Horsted for servicing, and also shunt vehicles around the carriage and wagon works where necessary. The usual loco used for this task at present is Normandy, an LSWR B4 class, although other locomotives fill in when required. This day was unusual in the fact that the Golden Arrow set was brought up for it's (six monthly?) exam, and the movement was combined with the light engine movement from Sheffield Park. As the engine for the vintage set for that day was the Dukedog, the first unenviable task at Horsted was to pull the strings on all the coaches, as being a GWR engine, it uses a higher vacuum level than all the others..... Shalford signalbox Presumably the remains of a water tower 166 125 stops at the station, with the passengers probably wondering what the hoses are for..... 166 125 departs I've always liked this sort of shot.... 166 209 approaches at speed.... 34045 rolls under the bridge.... ....and slows to a stand.... ....hopefully stopping.... ....in the right place for a drink...! One of the crew members prepares for the water Another crew member checks for anything running hot.... ....while everyone else gets the camera out... 34045 smokes gently The size of the chimney is always impressive The safety valves begin to lift.... ...and to add to the noise, the driver opens the drains on leaving...! Yet more photographers....! The restart was almost slip-free Even rebuilding doesn't seem to have provided working deflectors! The steam eventually starts clearing.... ....and Ottery St. Mary takes the train on.... ....and on..... ....unlucky for some? 13 in all.... Typically, it's sunnier further down! 166 134 arrives shortly afterwards

Two goods trains were mixed in with the day's service, a short pre-grouping set, and one from early nationalisation. Please note that many of these pictures were taken while performing the weekly track walk and come from areas not covered by lineside passes.
