Picture of the month
It seemed like a good idea at the time! My personal favourite picture from each month. These pictures are saved at a larger size (1024 by 768 pixels) than they are in the other galleries, and also at a lower compression rate. Please note that the full size images may take a while to appear if you are using dialup, however they will make a good wallpaper for your desktop should you like them! And yes, the date is a little ahead of itself, but it keeps the collection at the top of the page..... ;)

Bluebell Goods Train Weekend 2007
For the second year, this event was run over an entire weekend, although being rostered on the Saturday meant only a single day for taking photos.

Sun 21st Oct 2007
Bluebell Giants of Steam 2007 (Sunday)
The last day of the event, which mainly involved doing some strimming at the top of Freshfield Bank between trains. Once more,a fairly trouble free day except for another issue with 92 Squadron later in the day. All in all, a very good weekend and the weather made up for that in previous years as well, the odd cloud permtting....

Sat 20th Oct 2007
Bluebell Giants of Steam 2007 (Saturday)
The second day of the event promised some patchy cloud, which unfortunately turned up at the wrong moments for a large part of the day. Everything behaved itself by and large, although 34081 had a minor hiccup and missed double-heading with Wadebridge in the early afternoon. The question was, would I ever get a pic either 'rods down' or manage to keep the camera level - by the evidence here, apparently not very often in either case!!

Fri 19th Oct 2007
Bluebell Giants of Steam 2007 (Friday)
This year saw Friday added to the calendar, with a night shoot for the two visiting locos, WC 34007 Wadebridge and BoB 34081 92 Squadron. Would it be sunny? Would it rain? And could all four Bulleids survive three days without anything untoward happening to one of them?

Sat 4th Aug 2007 to Sun 5th Aug 2007
Brockenhurst (August 2007)
A couple of day trips to the Isle of Wight using the astonishingly good value rail/ferry ticket/Network Railcard combination gave some more opportunites for pics of the CIG, plus a ride on the one I hadn't been on before. Pity the IoW bus system isn't such good value - wot, no return tickets???

Sun 8th Jul 2007
Brockenhurst (July 2007)
With 'Clan Line' being out on the main line travelling in the opposite direction to my commute back to Bournemouth, Brockenhurst seemed an idea place to stop and wait for it. Would it be on time? Very close. Would the weather hold? Just about. Would it be going far quicker than I expected causing a major disaster on the photographic front? Check. Doh!

Fri 29th Jun 2007
Brockenhurst (June 2007)
One of the 'delights' of the current timetable between Bournemouth and Southampton is that the xx.27(ish) SWT service which you think would arrive at Soton before the xx.46 Voyager in fact doesn't. It stops at Brockenhurst for about a fortnight in order to let the Voyager through. So, rather than ease the 5 or 6 minute connection for the next train at Soton, intending connecting passangers get to wait for the train they could have caught from Bomo to start with. Handy for snapping the Lymington 3 CIG if nothing else....

Wed 3rd Jan 2007
Brockenhurst (January 2007)
A trip to Lymington in the New Year provided one of the last opportunities to see the 'Wessex' class 442 units passing through Brockenhurst before they went off-lease, thus depriving passengers of sensible seating and a bar-lounge between Waterloo and Weymouth amongst other routes. Hopefully someone will take them on - there's nothing quite like relaxing on a giant sofa with a beer while listening to the whine of British built electric stock clattering along between Southampton and Bournemouth!

Sat 11th Aug 2007 to Sun 12th Aug 2007
Bluebell 125
Celebrating 125 years of the line, everything that could move did. Well, for a while anyway. Sadly both visiting engines suffered from hot boxes, but nonetheless all the stops were pulled out to put on the best show possible. Fog on Saturday morning didn't help proceedings, but notwithstanding there was plenty to see and do. Sadly two turns in two days limited the photo opportunities to next to nothing, but an impromptu lineup in the loco yard on Saturday was not to be missed....

Sat 4th Aug 2007
Wootton (August 2007)
Wootton is the opposite end of the IoW line from Smallbrook Junction. In days gone by, the line used to continue from here through to Newport

Sat 4th Aug 2007
Smallbrook Junction (August 2007)
Smallbrook Junction is a very basic station provided purely as a link between the steam and electric railways on the island.

Sat 4th Aug 2007
Ryde Esplanade (August 2007)
Ryde Esplanade is the station on the land end of the pier, which is where most non ferry visitors are likely to board the electric railway.

Sat 4th Aug 2007
Havenstreet (August 2007)
Havenstreet is the middle station on the IoW steam railway, and home to the C+W and loco works. It also has a nature trail with a warped sense of humour.....

Sun 21st Jan 2007
Eastleigh (January 2007)
Occasionally I end up at Eastleigh due to diversions caused by engineering work, and on one occasion in January, it was actually light enough to take some pics....

Sun 1st Jul 2007
Southampton Central (July 2007)
Another station I spend ages waiting around for trains on is Southampton Central, which happily sees a nice variety of stock passing through, from Electrostars and Desiros to Class 66's, 156s, 158s and so on. The Wessex units are now long gone, but not forgotten!

Another station I spend ages waiting around for trains on is Southampton Central, which happily sees a nice variety of stock passing through, from Electrostars, Wessex Electrics and Desiros to Class 66's, 156s, 158s and so on. Well, until two days before these pics were taken when SWT very kindly stopped using the Wessex units, which were the only comfortable and quiet units they had....

Sun 13th May 2007
Bluebell War Weekend 2007
Once more the railway went to war for a weekend. Regrettably due to a Saturday cleaning turn and the Sunday weather, pics were at a premium, and decent pics even more so. Well, there was a war on after all...!

Sun 21st Jan 2007
Original files
My preferred image size is not sufficient to produce a particularly high quality finish should anyone wish to have the picture reproduced as a print directly from this gallery unless it is very small. The main reason for this is that most people don't want to have nice glossy print of every single shot I've taken (or any shot for that matter!), so there's little point in posting huge pictures that fill the screen or are even larger, especially given the time they will take to load, and the fact that if I had have done, this gallery would occupy more than twenty times the space I get allocated.

However, I have noticed the odd purchase here and there, and obviously I'd like the end result to look the best possible. Therefore I have decided that on request, I will upload the original file so that anyone interested can get Fotopic's printshop service to conjure them up a print, mousemat or coffee mug can have one where the picture doesn't look like the subject is made from Lego!

So with apologies to Mr Summers who enquired ages ago about getting some decent prints of a couple of shots of the DukeDog, here are some rather larger pics.

Sun 19th Nov 2006
Brockenhurst (November 2006)
Brockenhurst is the station where the Lymington 'heritage' line operates to, giving people the chance to travel in a train with comfy seats, non-recycled air (ie opening windows as opposed to the deafening air conditioning used elsewhere), and best of all, no infuriating Customer Irritation System babbling on about penalty fares, short platforms and telling you for the twenty-seventh time that train calls at numerous stations where no-one gets on or off! In addition, you can still find the moveable postal trolley bridge (or whatever it was) that used to allow parcels etc. to be taken from the station building to platform 2 without needing to carry it up the footbridge.

Barnham (June 2006)
I am 'lucky' enough to spend a large amount of time at Barnham waiting for connecting trains. Fortunately there is some interst o be had at this station, as it is the point where he branch to Bognor Regis leaves the Brighton-Portsmouth line, and there are plenty of services passing through using a variety of different stock.

Mid Hants Pway visit 2006
The usual exchange visit with our friends on the Mid Hants Pway team, as ever coincidentally occurring with a gala event. What better way to spend a sunny day than undertaking a track walk, as well as comparing different methods for the important Pway tasks of preparing cake and drinking tea?

Cheltenham Race Course
This eponymously named station is currently one end of the GWR, and on our visit to the line the gang dropped in one evening for a look. Many thanks to the bobby on duty who invited us in for a look around his 'box!

Sat 9th Dec 2006
Severn Valley Railway Lineside
After checking and rechecking the weather forecast, a much mooted trip to the SVR was finally decided upon. When the bright sunshine and wispy cloud on the journey there gave way to black clouds with no end in sight, all looked lost. Fortunately, the sun came out after a while, to much relief all round.

Sat 11th Nov 2006 to Sun 12th Nov 2006
Bluebell Terrier Weekend 2006
Always trying to be one step of the opposition, this event would see a new record in preservation - no less than six members of the same class in action at the same railway at the same time. Unfortunately, 'Bodiam' was failed at the last minute and was unable to attend, but there were still seven Brighton built locos in service: 'Terriers' 672 'Fenchurch', 55 'Stepney', 662 (formerly Martello), 32678 (formerly Knowle), and W8 'Freshwater', also E4 class 32473 (formerly Birch Grove), 80151 (the latest Brighton built loco surviving) and the SER O1 class no 65.

Sat 4th Nov 2006
114 Enters traffic
After many years of hard work, LCDR brake 114 was finally ready to be released into traffic, and to acknowledge the work put in by the team involved, a special train was run for them with 661 and a rare passenger outing by Stepney. Unfortunately, the weather was too good, and the bright sunshine and cloudless sky combined to confound my camera into chronic overexposure for the most part, so apologies for the less than wonderful results!

Sun 29th Oct 2006 to Mon 30th Oct 2006
Bluebell Wizard Weekend 2006
A popular annual event for the kids, it also give the grown-ups the chance to regress into their childhood as well.....

Bluebell Giants of Steam 2006
The visiting engine for this year was 3440 City of Truro, which brought together the two surviving outside framed GWR 4-4-0s for the first time in preservation

Sun 15th Oct 2006
City of Truro night shoot
During its visit, it was arranged for the City of Truro to be posed at Sheffield Park for a night photoshoot with the Bluebell's own GWR outside framed 4-4-0, Earl of Berkeley

Sun 11th Jun 2006
Didcot Parkway
Situated next door to Didcot power station, this station is also next to Didcot Railway Centre. After visiting this, the opportunity was taken to raid the vending machine for cold drinks, and take a few shots of the passing HSTs, Voyagers and others.

One of the Bluebell's annual events, this is exactly what it says on the tin. Featuring mock gun battles, authentically costumed characters and superbly restored vintage vehicles, this is an event like no other on the Bluebell calendar

Bluebell Branchline Weekend 2006 - Night shoot
As is now customary, there was a night photoshoot on the Saturday of the Branchline weekend. This year's shot featured newly-restored 1638 with a set of SR coaches including some Maunsell stock, and visiting Ivatt 41312 (masquerading as a classmate) on a short goods train. It also featured an extremely chilling wind and a pint of beer...

1638 enters traffic
Today saw the newly finished Maunsell 'U' class 1638 in service for the first time with something other than a test train. A survivor from the famous Barry scrapyard after the purchase was funded by George Nickson, it is now back in running order for the first time in over 40 years. As a bonus, the locomotive was also in service the following day on the lunchtime Golden Arrow.

Bluebell Thursday Shunt
Believed to be the only regular scheduled steam shunt in the country, the opportunity is taken on most Mondays and Thursdays to take stock to Horsted for servicing, and also shunt vehicles around the carriage and wagon works where necessary. The usual loco used for this task at present is Normandy, an LSWR B4 class, although other locomotives fill in when required. This day was unusual in the fact that the Golden Arrow set was brought up for it's (six monthly?) exam, and the movement was combined with the light engine movement from Sheffield Park. As the engine for the vintage set for that day was the Dukedog, the first unenviable task at Horsted was to pull the strings on all the coaches, as being a GWR engine, it uses a higher vacuum level than all the others.....

Horsted Keynes (December 2005)
This is the (former) junction station on the Bluebell Railway, where the p-way, wagon and carriage and S+T departments are based, to name but a few. In days gone by, there used to be a branch line to Ardingly, which was lifted and several key structures were removed. Eventually it is hoped that the line can be reopened, but the extension to East Grinstead has to be the priority. Regarded as one of the finest preserved stations in the country, it has been restored to it's Southern Railway condition, and the whole site has grade II listed status.

Bluebell Goods Train Day 2005
This year saw the second annual event, with bright sunshine in the morning, followed by a rather overcast afternoon. Two goods trains were mixed in with the day's service, a short pre-grouping set, and one from early nationalisation. Please note that many of these pictures were taken while performing the weekly track walk and come from areas not covered by lineside passes.

LB&SCR A1 class
This is the original form in which the famous 'Terrier' class designed by William Stroudley appeared in, when they were built between 1872 and 1880. When withdrawn by BR, Fenchurch was the oldest working steam locomotive on their books. 672 is preserved as close as possible to the original A1 form, although the eagle-eyed or well informed will be able to spot the few differences where it was not practical, which probably make the locomotive unique, and technically neither A1 or A1x...

After many years of hard work, LBSCR Stroudley First No.661, built in 1880, was returned to traffic on July 24 2004. The standard of workmanship is something else, and surely it will be an award winner. Typically those responsible didn't sit back on their laurels, and immediately wheeled the next project into workshop. Some people need their heads felt! ;)

SR Q1 class
The Q1 class was designed by OVS Bulleid, and introduced in 1942. The very bleak appearance was due to the use of the bare minimum of materials to produce the locomotive because of the wartime shortages. Often regarded as the 'ugliest locomotive ever', the performance was far more impressive than the appearance!

L&SWR 0415 class radial tank
Introduced in 1882, this locomotive class was designed by William Adams for suburban passenger work. Three members of the class were retained for use on the Lyme Regis branch due to the wheelbase of the locomotive suiting the sharp curves. The locomotives have quite small side tanks, with extra water capacity provided by well tanks between the frames.

A few rather fuzzy shots taken while waiting for a steam special that never came....

Sat 22nd Nov 2003
GWR Dukedog class
This class of loco was rebuilt in the 1920's and 30's using parts from the Bulldog (frames) and Duke (boiler) classes and given a new lease of life

Mon 3rd Nov 2003
Forest of Dean Railway
I finally got around to developing a roll of film that had been in the camera ages before I decided to use it up. It then waited even more years before I got it done. The camera was fairly cheap, and I reckon it was about 8 years or more ago.....

Sun 2nd Nov 2003
9017 Earl of Berkeley
The newly re-comissioned locomotive in service on the Bluebell Railway

Sat 1st Nov 2003
Dukedog day!
Today saw the re-entry into service of one of the longest serving Bluebell engines, 3017/9017 Earl of Berkeley. Apologies for the poor pictures, even by my standards. It was summed up when I managed to erase what would certainly have been my best picture to date after I forgot to save the mulitple shot selection I had just taken - very frustrating!

Wed 6th Aug 2003
Amberley
Another middle of nowhere station, Amberley is about a mile or so from the village that it serves. One of the biggest sources of passengers through this station must surely be the Amberley Chalk Pits Museum.

OVS Bulleid passes by Horsted House Farm Sat 25th Oct 2003 to Sun 26th Oct 2003
Bluebell Giants of Steam 2003
Pictures taken during the annual 'Giants of steam' weekend, where all the big locos were in steam. Please note that some of the pictures appearing in this section are taken from areas normally out of bounds to photographers due to the fact that I was working on the permenant way at the time. Information on where photography is permitted can be found at the Bluebell Railway Lineside Photographic Permit page, which is listed in the links section of this site.

Sat 18th Oct 2003
SE&CR O1 class
The O class was designed by J Stirling and built starting in 1878. It was rebuilt with a different cab and H class boiler by Wainwright with a view to standardising the company's locos, with no 65 being treated in 1908. The modified locomotives were reclassified as the O1 class.

Sat 18th Oct 2003
LB&SCR A1X class 'Terrier'
The 'Terrier' or A1 class, was designed by Stroudley, and built between 1872 and 1880. In the years after about 1910, a number of the Terriers were converted for use with push-pull trains, which included the fitting of a larger boiler amongst other modifications, and were reclassified A1X. This is the form in which 'Stepney' is preserved in.

Sun 28th Sep 2003
Ropley
This intermediate station on the Mid-Hants line is home to the loco department. The station is also well known for it's topiery, a tradition that seems to date back to when it was part of the railway network.

Sun 17th Aug 2003 to Sat 25th Oct 2003
Kingscote
The current northern terminus of the Bluebell Railway, this rural station was about 2 miles by rail from East Grinstead, and will be again in the not too distant future when the extension project is complete. It has been restored to represent BR conditions around the time the line closed.

Sun 17th Aug 2003 to Sun 31st Aug 2003
Sheffield Park (August 2003)
Sheffield Park is the southern terminus of the Bluebell Railway, and home to the loco dept, which boasts a comprehensive workshop and running shed, with all the facilities required for running and restoring the locomotives. There are also a couple of shops, model railway, and most importantly, a restaurant and pub!

Sun 31st Aug 2003 to Sun 7th Sep 2003
West Hoathly
This station between Horsted Keynes and Kingscote was demolished in 1968 following the closure of the line, leaving just the remnants of the platforms as a reminder of where the staion used to be.

Mon 4th Aug 2003
Warnham
Another small station on the outskirts of Horsham, warnham not only has a handwheel operated level crossing (closed overnight), but it also has some semaphore signals as well.

Sun 12th Oct 2003
LNER V2 class
The V2 class was introduced on the LNER in 1936 as a high speed mixed traffic locomotive. 60800 Green Arrow visited the Bluebell for a few weeks, so I got a few pictures of it, unforunately I never got a chance to get insde the cab, or get many closeup pictures as it was just too popular!

Thu 28th Aug 2003
Sharpthorne Tunnel
Pictures taken during the tunnel inspection. Please note that the tunnel and surrounding areas are norally out of bounds. For further details about lineside photography, please visit the Bluebell Railway Lineside Photographic Permits page, which can be found in the links section of this site.

Sun 24th Aug 2003 to Sun 26th Oct 2003
Bluebell p-way dept
Some pictures taken during my work on the volunteer p-way gang, which does have the advantage of being able to photograph areas normally out of limits. I also sometimes help out if there isn't something to take a picture of.....

Tue 5th Aug 2003 to Tue 16th Sep 2003
Pulborough
This is one of the many places that the Arun Valley line crosses the River Arun, but is probably the area with the most impressive set of structures for doing so. It also has a very photogenic signalbox, as the signalmen are obviously keen horticulturists!

Thu 7th Aug 2003
Ockley
Ockley is about half way between Horsham and Dorking, and yet another examlpe of a station that is quite a way away from the village that it is named after!

Sun 28th Sep 2003
SE&CR N class
Designed by REL Maunsell and introduced in 1917, the N class was a mixed traffic locomotive used mianly in the South Eastern region and in the West of England area

Sun 28th Sep 2003
Mid-Hants lineside
Pictures taken during a track walk on the visit of the Bluebell p-way gang to the Mid-Hants railway.

Sat 23rd Aug 2003 to Sat 18th Oct 2003
Bluebell loco dept
I work in the loco department as well as the p-way gang, which gives me the opportunity to get filthy dirty while cleaning the locomotives and shovelling out the ash pits. It also allows me to get some decent close up pictures of the locomotives for modelling purposes.

Tue 16th Sep 2003
Ex BR Lineside
Pictures taken in the vicinity of the lineside of 'big railway'

Wed 6th Aug 2003
Littlehaven
A small halt just outside of Horsham Station, boasting one of the last few remaining handwheel operated level crossings on the rail network

Sun 31st Aug 2003 to Sun 26th Oct 2003
Bluebell lineside
The vast majority of these pictures have been taken while attending the Sunday volunteer pway gang. Please note that some of the areas these pictures are take in may be outside the boundaries of the lineside pass. More information about lineside photograpy permits can be found at the Bluebell Railway Lineside Photographic Permits page, which can be found in the links section on the front page of this site.

Sat 11th Oct 2003
SE&CR H class
The H class was designed by Wainwright, and introduced in 1904 for suburban passenger services.

Fri 22nd Aug 2003 to Fri 17th Oct 2003
Ford
This station on the Coastway Line is the first port of call for trains leaving the Arun Valley Line (if they haven't gone to Littlehampton first). It sees a variety of services, from Mk1 EMUs and electrostars to class 159 and 156 on the Brighton-Cardiff service. There are occasional loco movements and engineer's trains, the Orient Express set can sometimes be seen behind a class 47, and at present you can also see two class 31s top-and-tailing four Mk2 coaches as a replacement Brighton-Cardiff train at approximately 3.50pm on a Friday!

The first four panels of Bullhead rail laid on Jarrah sleepers reprocessed by the Sunday pway gang, at Vowels Lane bridge. Sun 21st Sep 2003
Bluebell northern extension (September 2003)
The first of these pictures were taken during an exchange visit between the volunteer p-ways gangs of the Bluebell and Mid-Hants Railways on 21 September 2003, with the occasional trip north when time permits on a Sunday morning delivering supplies for the extension team. This section of the railway is a working site, and therefore access is not permitted without special arrangement.

Sat 11th Oct 2003
LB&SCR E4 class
The E4 class, introduced in 1872, was designed by RJ Billinton for suburban passenger services, but also saw service on empty coaching stock and shunting.

Sat 16th Aug 2003
Horley
This station is just a little way down the line from Three Bridges, in fact you can just about see from one station to the other due to the width and straightness of the line here. I took the pics here from the footbridge nearer the centre of the town, as it's about 30 yards from a useful motorcycle shop that I sometimes frequent

Tue 30th Sep 2003 to Sun 12th Oct 2003
SR West Country/Battle of Britain class
Designed by OVS Bulleid, and introduced in 1945, the West Country and Battle of Britain classes were basically a smaller version of the Merchant Navy class, the idea being that they would have a wider sphere of operation than the larger locomotive.

Sun 10th Aug 2003
Dorking
Dorking station is one of two in the town, the other being Dorking Deepdene. It is where SWT services from London terminate, leaving SouthCentral services to take passengers on to Horsham.

Sat 4th Oct 2003
BR Std 5
The BR standard class 5mt was first introduced in 1951, as a development of the LMS class 5 mixed traffic locomotive. In later years I believe they gained names from the King Arthur class locmotives, 73082 Camelot being an example.

Sat 6th Sep 2003
SE&CR C class
The C class was built between 1900 and 1908, designed by Wainwright for freight trains, but often used on local passenger services as well.

Sun 10th Aug 2003
Boxhill and Westhumble
Just a short hop along the line from Dorking, this station, while being relatively compact still boasts some nice architecture.

Mon 4th Aug 2003
Christ's Hospital
This station was built to serve the nearby Bluecoat School when it moved to the area. It was a vert large affair, as it was expected that the pupils would commute, however this turned out not to be the case! There used to be a junction with the LB&SCR line to Guildford, but this line was closed in 1965.

Fri 22nd Aug 2003
Arundel
The last station on the Arun Valley line before it joins the 'Coastway' line that runs from Brighton to Bognor Regis, Portsmouth and beyond, this station is on the outskirts of the town. In common with most stations of it's type, the goods shed survived to be a builder's merchant, and the goods yard is now a car park, but the original buildings are pretty much as they were built

Sun 28th Sep 2003
Alton
The end of the line at the Mid-Hants, this station is also used by Network Rail, and provides a link to the 'big railway' which is handy for visiting locomotives and stock

Sun 28th Sep 2003
Alresford
Situated at the non Network Rail end of the Mid Hants railway, this station is home to most of the line's coaching stock, and the goods traffic that once left here gave the line it's other name of 'The watercress Line'.

Sun 21st Sep 2003
Billingshurst
This small station on the Arun Valley line boasts the oldest working signal box on the line, reputed to be possibly the oldest in the country, and maybe even the world! I cannot verify this at present however.

Sun 28th Sep 2003
Medstead and Four Marks
An intermediate station on the Mid-Hants line, situated on a particularly steep set of gradients - the section of line to Alton being known as 'over the Alps'. It is home to the p-way gang.

Sat 4th Oct 2003
SE&CR P class
The P class, designed by Wainwright, was built in 1910 and basically an updated 'Terrier' class. Four of these locomotives have survived into preservation, and three can be found at the Bluebell, although at present none are operational.

Sat 9th Aug 2003
Three Bridges
This busy junction station is where the Arun Valley line meets the main London-Brighton line. This gives the oportunity of seeing Mk1 EMUs, class 319s, electrostars and other types of electric traction, as well as AMEC and EWS equipment that is stored in the nearby yard.

Fri 1st Aug 2003 to Sun 31st Aug 2003
